Raku – a Japanese word freely interpreted as
“ENJOYMENT.” This low-fire technique has become a workshop
favourite for its immediacy, drama and sociability. Pots
are taken out of the red hot kiln after one hour and
subjected to a number of post firing treatments. Rolling
the pots in straw and leaves can create a reduction
atmosphere (as well as plenty of smoke and flame),
resulting in attractive markings and glaze effects. On
this raku workshop you will build a raku kiln from easily
sourced and cheap materials and importantly you will make
and fire work and enjoy the satisfaction of completing the
ceramic cycle from forming clay to glazed finished pieces
in one session.
This course is suitable for all levels, including
beginners.
